[edit] Introduction

This is the obligatory introduction to this project. Eventually it will be better worded, and run through a spell checker to make sure I am not embarrassing myself.

I have been playing recently in games using the D20 system. Even though I keep complaining about certain aspects of the system, it is one of the most commonly used out there. Even with the advent of Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition, D20 3.0 and 3.5 are still in common use. Much of this is because of the Gaming License created by Wizards of the Coast.

Another side effect of this is the fact that other companies have been able to make minor changes to the way things work within their own games while still using the basic D20 system in its entirety. They have been able to do this legally and without threat of copyright infringement. Even if Wizards didn’t keep the system active at their end, they did something important before they dropped it. Either intentionally, or unintentionally, they have given the gaming community the tools needed to keep the D20 system alive and well, and use it to their own ends.

They have loyally maintained copies of the 3.5 SRD available on their own website, even though other companies have posted it themselves. They still devote their technical resources to this end, even if they are not devoting massive amounts of manpower to it.

Anyway, I digress. The Open Gaming License allows people to use the system as they see fit within the guidelines of the license. Most companies have used the system as is with only minor Tweaks. In most cases the Tweaks are specific to one or two items, and go no further than the page that they are on.

The entire point however of Tweak RPG is to Tweak the system itself on a larger scale. To change bits and pieces of it until it fits the needs of myself and potential future users.

More importantly, I have decided on the name Tweak for two major reasons First, I intend for the entirety of the Tweak RPG system to be available under the terms of the Open Gaming License so that others may make use of it for their own games and products: so they can make whatever Tweaks they need.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, I intend for several aspects of the system itself to be fully Tweakable. It is this reason that it is starting at its core as a majorly Tweaked version of the Anime D20 SRD. Some of the biggest initial tweaks (as system development starts) will be reincorporating many of the standard D20 SRD elements that have been removed or modified in the Anime D20 rules.

By combining these aspects, and a few changes of my own, the result will be something very much like a more modular and tweakable version of the core D20 SRD.

I am not promising direct compatibility, but I will include and maintain a page for conversion information to allow you to more easily convert characters between the different systems.

[edit] Notes

  1. This project is not intended to be completely compatible with other D20 products, but conversion informaiton will be provided.
  2. Not every creature will be exactly as it is in the Core D20 settings. Some of the creatures as listed will apply more to my own game worlds. If you like the original versions better, then use them. That is part of the point of Tweak RPG.

[edit] The Book List

These are the books that are intended to be created as a part of this project. I have them listed here in order of priority.

[edit] Index Setting

Every system needs a default setting. The default setting for the TweakRPG system is the Acrose Campaign Setting. While there will be some information that varies slightly between the setting and the system, this is simply because we also intend for the system to be usable with any setting the GM chooses to run their campaign in.

[edit] IRC Channel

I am starting an IRC channel for the project on irc.darkmyst.org #TweakRPG

I am also putting a channel on EsperNet.  :-) Let me know which one you think is better.

[edit] Legal

See NexusCrossing OGL For legal information. I will eventually create a separate OGL license page for this project as well, as it will be needed if the “book” is ever to truly become a bound volume of any sort. For the moment, the work is included as part of the NexusCrossing Wiki OGL.

This system will also incorporate aspects from a number of sources, including Paizo Game’s Pathfinder RPG. Pathfinder is an OGL system based off of the D20 3.5 system. While their goals are not identical to mine, they have some very good ideas. For a copy of the Pathfinder RPG Beta check http://paizo.com . This is the play testing version, and is a big file, but worth the download. This is also your chance to give input on their commercial product.
