Acrose: A Land at War

Acrose is a land at war. It was once divided into numerous kingdoms, and territories, each ruling themselves in their own manner. This is not to say that they have ever been at peace for more than a century.

The people of Acrose have been at war as long as the oldest of the elder races can remember. Individual nations have been at peace with each other, but there is always a war somewhere. As such, the peoples of Acrose are warrior races. They are proud, and they recognize strength.

Magic is very rare on Acrose. The necessary energies are there, but most people either fear it, or do not realize it exists. As such, those few magicians, and sorcerers that do exist, are feared, or revered.

For the past five hundred years, Acrose has been divided, with some stability, into eight warring nations. These nations were Acrone, Marsone, Gindral, Harkone, Gengal, Marntal, Treans, and Telone. These nations were constantly at war, but for five hundred years they have maintained cohesion, and their borders have not changed by more than one hundred miles in any direction. That was until the Great War of Acrose, which ended with the destruction of the twelve ruling houses of the continent.

Fourteen years ago, the last in a long line of wars took place on Acrose. In a series of almost unnatural attacks, all twelve of the ruling families were totally destroyed. There were no known survivors. Not a man, woman, or child. This coup de` tat was orchestrated by the house of Algdon.

In the nine years since the end of that 5 year war, minor civil wars, and local skirmishes have taken place. Many of the larger cities are still their own political entities, and some hold sway within the new empire, but they are left alone as long as they do not oppose the house of Algdon.

Cultural Notes:

Most of the cities and towns on the continent of Acrose have a common set of prefixes attached to the names to describe them. Cities with the prefix 'Ar' such as ArNal, are capitols. A capital is simply a large city. Many capitols were at one point in time the head of a kingdom, or at least a merchant city. Cities with the prefix 'Tal' such as TalZan, and TalSarn, are smaller towns and cities. Villages don't usually have prefixes attached to their names. Not all cities follow this rule of course. A Prime example is the City State Maltier, which is also known by some of it's more proud residence, as the Damned City, because it is always at war, and many are convinced that it is doomed to stay as such for eternity.

The term capital, does not necessarily refer to a seat of political power. It generally refers to a large city. Although these cities do hold more political sway than smaller towns, They do not necessarily have any official ruling position within their region. They are however often the actual political capitals within their region.
